JHD Family Weekend 2016

JHD Weekend

JHD Weekend

We had such wonderful weather this year for the JHD weekend – and when the sun shines like this in the Lake District, and you are with family and friends there really is nowhere better to be!

As usual, the Calvert Trust organised a great mix of activities including horse riding, archery, canoeing, zipwire and swimming. The horse-riding is always particularly popular, as is the zipwire. The parents usually take part in separate sessions to enable them to have a chance to meet and share, followed by a glorious sailing session on Sunday morning. On the Friday night after people had arrived and settled in, they had the chance to use the wonderful swimming pool and Jacuzzi to relax or an evening walk lead by the Calvert Trust. Saturday evening was a ‘Disco Fever’ party - we transformed the games room for the disco and also had a very popular photobooth.

A huge big thank you to the families who come, to the Calvert Trust who do such a great job, and to all those who volunteer to help at the weekend.

The weekend is becoming very popular, and particularly so for the past couple of years, so I would encourage anyone interested in coming to get their booking form in early! We can’t wait to see you next year –whether you have been coming for years or whether you are just starting to think about trying it for the first time!

JHD Family Weekend 2015

Juvenile Huntington's Disease Weekend 2015

This was our eleventh weekend we have held, having started the JHD weekend in 2005 following suggestions from families. This was our largest weekend ever with thirteen families! The weekend has grown over the years, but some things never change and in particular the inspirational stories that we always seem to come away with from the weekend. There were also lots of smiles!

The weekend is aimed at the whole family, including the young person with HD, parents/carers, as well as brothers and sisters. The young people with JHD and siblings take part in the activities available at the Calvert Trust (Keswick), including horse riding (always very popular!), archery, canoeing, rock-climbing and swimming. The parents usually take part in separate sessions to enable them to have a chance to meet and share, followed by a slightly wet trip on a Catamaran on Sunday morning. On Saturday evening we turned the main room into Neverland! It was really enjoyed by all, and gave everyone a chance to relax.

We can’t wait to see you next year!

JHD Family Weekend 2014

Juvenile Huntington's Disease Weekend 2014

The Calvert Trust in the Lake District hosted the JHD Family Weekend in June as usual this year. It is a weekend for young people with Juvenile Huntington’s Disease and their families, to meet others in a similar situation and to try some activities that they might otherwise not have the opportunity to do.

The weather was not quite as good as last year and we did have some rain on Saturday , but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the young people and their families or the volunteers. Activities this year included horse riding – back by popular demand - swimming in the fabulous sensory pool and canoeing. The zipwire was also in the programme again with lots of screams being heard back at base as people zoomed down on this.

Our theme for Saturday night was the Wild West and the Calvert Trust was converted into a barn and Native American reservation for the night. We had an Indian Trail, making feather headdresses, and painting a wigwam as some of the activities and Poppy Hill spent the whole night creating bullet wounds and other injuries with her special make up, as well as face painting. Everyone joined in with great enthusiasm and the standard of fancy dress was very high.

On the Sunday the young people carried on with activities and the parents had an opportunity to go out on the lake in a catamaran if they wished – a bit chilly but great fun.

We have booked next year’s dates as 29th – 31st May 2015 and Helen Santini will be running the weekend again. If you are interested in coming then do get in touch with Helen on 01279 507656 or contact Head Office 0151 331 5444 or by email to info@hda.org.uk

Thank you to our sponsor, The Sylvia Adams Charitable Trust and a huge thanks to the families and volunteers who help to make the weekend such fun.

JHD Weekend 2013

Juvenile Huntington's Disease Weekend 2013

The JHD Weekend this year was held as usual at the Calvert Trust in the Lake District. We welcomed some new families as well as seeing some regulars return for a glorious sunny weekend. Activities included the usual canoeing, rock climbing and of course use of the amazing pool. The Calvert trust were able to offer cycling and a zipwire this year as 2 new activities which were a great success.

On the Saturday night we held a party with a Hollywood theme – some amazing costumes and a great atmosphere as the photos go to show!

This weekend gives families and individuals the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation as well as having a great time and experiencing some exciting activities.

If you are interested in attending, next year’s dates are booked for the 6th – 8th June 2014 and please contact Head Office 0151 331 5444

JHD Family Weekend 2012

As is by now tradition, we held the JHD weekend in June at the Calvert Trust in the Lake District. Every year, we seem to have a nice mix between those who have been before whilst being able to welcome new faces. For the past two years we have been able to have more people at the weekend as the Calvert Trust has expanded their facilities, but the weekend has still managed to retain a really friendly atmosphere, and the size still seems to make it easy for people who have come for the first time to get to know everyone else really easily.

We had the usual mix of fun activities on offer including Kurling, horse riding, canoeing, sailing, archery, swimming and rock climbing. Having seen last year how great the new swimming pool is (you have to see it to believe it!) we managed to arrange for us to have more booked sessions in the pool. We had a Mexican themed party on the Saturday night and we have some great photos and memories of everyone in their sombreros and ponchos! You’ll have to wait to find out what next year’s theme will be; it’s going to be good!

The purpose of the weekend is to give young people with HD and their families an opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation, whilst also having a great weekend full of exciting activities! The weekend is also an opportunity for families to find out more about JHD, both from other parents and professionals.

This year the weekend will be held from the 7th to 9th June 2013. Please contact Head Office if you are interested in coming or want to know more about the weekend or click here for more information.

JHD Weekend

JHD Family Weekend 2011

Our seventh JHD Family Weekend was held at the Calvert Trust in the Lake District again from the 3rd – 5th June 2011, and was as successful as previous years. We had quite a few new families come for the first time this year, and so it was great to welcome them, as well as seeing all the families who have been before. This year was the biggest year we’ve held so far, as the Calvert Trust now has more space on site, so it was also great to be able to offer the weekend to more people.

The Calvert Trust has some great activities, including horse-riding, canoeing, sailing, archery, swimming and rock climbing, so there is something for everyone and for every type of weather! They have opened a new swimming pool this year, which has lots of special additions – it was really enjoyed by those who went in!

As is now becoming tradition, we had a themed party on the Saturday night – Bollywood! For those who wanted to, everyone was able to dress up in various things, very kindly provided by one of the families that comes to the weekend. Everyone looked great! We were even treated to some fantastic Indian music and drumming – thanks again to the same family - which even got lots of us up and dancing! A memorable evening!

The purpose of the weekend is to give young people with HD and their families an opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation, whilst also having a great weekend full of exciting activities! The weekend is also an opportunity for families to find out more about JHD, both from other parents and professionals.
